Canada – Albania Bilateral Relations

Canada’s Ambassador in Rome is accredited to Albania, while an Honorary Consulate in Tirana assists Canadian interests in Albania. Immigration and visa applications by Albanians are processed by the Citizenship and Immigration Canada office in the Canadian Embassy in Rome, whose staff members visit Albania periodically to interview candidates.

Albania joined the Canadian Military Training Assistance Programme (MTAP) in 2005, which aims at training Albanian military officers in Canada.  There is no official Canadian development assistance program in Albania, but the Canadian International Development Agency operates a local “Canada Fund” facility, worth Cdn $50,000 per year to support projects delivered by Albanian civil society organizations. Canada also provides assistance to Albania in an anti-personnel mine destruction program, and contributed expertise, training and Cdn $500,000 to help the Albanian military to destroy some 10,000 tonnes of small arms and light weapons ammunition. To date, Canada has contributed $ 500,000 to this project.

Canada’s exports to Albania in 2007 amounted to $13 million, while imports were $ 2  million. Calgary’s Bankers Petroleum is Albania’s largest foreign investor, in a project aimed at developing Europe’s largest on-land oil deposit in south central Albania. Canadian mining companies also invest and participate commercially in copper, zinc, gold and silver mining projects.

In 2003-2004, Canadian Official Development Assistance to Albania totaled $4.53 million.

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) does not maintain a significant assistance program in Albania

Albania, a country eligible for official development assistance, can benefit from various programs, such as:

multilateral programs, including the International Humanitarian Assistance Program;
other programs that allow institutions, associations, Canadian and international non-governmental organizations and, private sector enterprises to receive funding from CIDA to execute projects worldwide; and
the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives managed by the Canadian Embassy in Italy.
